Ceramics of Die Neue Sammlung

From Art Nouveau to the present

Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum features more than 120,000 objects, making it one of the world’s most important design collections. Its range of ceramic items documents the radical transformation that has taken place since Art Nouveau: Under Japanese influence, freely flowing glazes and organic shapes emerged that revolutionized traditional European ideas.

The selection for Weiden traces this liberation of ceramics – from the artistically crafted unique vessel of the 1920s, through the studio ceramics of the post-war period, to the sculptural installations of today. Since the 1960s, ceramics have once and for all established themselves as an autonomous art form beyond functional constraints.

The international scope of the collection deliberately eschews a purely European perspective: Contemporary works from Japan, Korea and Africa stand as equals alongside European and American pieces. This global viewpoint underscores how differently cultures today engage with the oldest material known to humankind, with approaches that range from the conceptual to a conscious return to artisanal traditions.
