The Berlin-based artist Helmut Menzel has created a series of ceramic vessels for the IKM Weiden that are both practical and, at the same time, appear as small sculptures. His objects are created using wooden moulds, casting, glazing and firing. The form is not determined solely by the artist’s free hand. Tools, techniques and material reactions also play a part in shaping the works. It is precisely this that creates their unique tension between series and individual pieces, function and sculptural composition.
