Seltmann Collection

Porcelain from China

The Seltmann Collection shows porcelain from the Qing Dynasty.
The Qing Dynasty was a time
from the year 1644 to the year 1911 in China.
The time period is famous for its porcelain.
Porcelain is a very fine and hard ceramic.
It turns white after firing.
The colors and decorations were very detailed and pretty.

The emperors of China in that time wanted high-quality porcelain.
2 styles became very popular in Europe:
Blue-and-white porcelain
and the pink family style called “famille rose”.
In the years 1600 until 1800 people in Europe
loved Chinese objects very much.
Later emperors did not continue this high quality.
The porcelain quality became weaker.

Dr. h.c. Wilhelm Seltmann from Weiden was a porcelain maker.
He collected many Chinese porcelain objects.
He liked exotic objects with decoration.
Exotic means from far away and different from everyday life in Europe.
In 1994 his wife Maria Seltmann gave the collection to the museum.
It was as a gift for her 90th birthday.
The collection shows famous pieces
from around the year 1600 until the year 1990.
Many researchers did not study newer ceramic objects.
That is why the Seltmann Collection is especially important.
In 2025 the Seltmann Collection was arranged in a new way.
The exhibition shows more than 100 objects.
