Ceramics of The New Collection

From Art Nouveau to the present

Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum has more than 120.000 objects.
It is one of the most important design museums in the world.
Design means to plan the form of an object.

The ceramic collection shows
how ceramics changed since the time of Art Nouveau.
Art Nouveau is an art style from around 120 years ago.
It uses curved lines and soft shapes.
At that time people looked at Japanese art.
They learned new ideas for glazing.
A glaze is the shiny layer on a ceramic object after firing.
Old ideas about ceramics in Europe changed.

The collection in Weiden shows this change.
You can see vessels from the 1920s from artists.
You can see studio ceramics
from the time after the Second World War.
Studio ceramics means:
Art made in small workshops by artists.
You can also see ceramic installations from today.
Installations are artworks you can walk around
or experience in a space.

Since 1950 ceramics is a proper art form.
This means it is not only a functional objects,
like a bowl or a plate.
It is also a piece of art.

The museum shows ceramics from many countries.
It does not show only a European view.
There are new works from
Japan, Korea, Africa, Europe and America.
This shows that different cultures use clay in very different ways.
Some works are conceptual.
Conceptual means that the idea behind the artwork is very important.
Other works use traditional techniques.

Modern ceramics like vases and bowls are displayed in glass in a simple, minimalist room.
