Old Ceramics from 5 Bavarian State Museums

Selected pieces from Munich collections

The museum shows ceramic art
from many cultures and many times.
You can see Greek vase paintings and Egyptian faience.
Faience is a kind of colorful glazed pottery.
You can see Pakistani blue ceramics
and animal figurines from old cultures in South America.
These objects show that ceramics was important
in different times and in different parts all over the world.

State Collections of Antiquities
The State Collections of Antiquities opened in 1848.
They are one of the most important museums
for ancient art in the world.
Ancient means:
From the time of very old cultures, like Greece and Rome.
In Weiden you can see pieces of Greek vase art
that are around 2900 to 2200 years old.
There is black-figure and red-figure painting.
This means, the figures on the vases were painted in black or red.
The vases and pictures are very high quality.

Archaeological State Collection
The Archaeological State Collection
shows objects from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages.
The objects are from about 8.000 until about 1.000 years ago.
Some objects come from Bavaria,
others from the Mediterranean region and the Near East.
The Collections have early cult figurines, clay toys for children
and Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets.
Cuneiform is one of the oldest writing systems in the world.

Museum Fünf Kontinente
The Museum Fünf Kontinente shows objects from cultures outside Europe:
• vessels with red painting from the Ban Chiang in Thailand
• bright turquoise and blue vessels from the city of Multan in Pakistan
• ceramics from Peru that was made before the Europeans came to America
These objects show how different cultures used clay.

State Museum of Egyptian Art
In the year 2013 the State Museum of Egyptian Art
opened in a new building.
It is the only museum in the world
that shows only ancient Egyptian art.
In Weiden you can see ceramics from Egypt
from more than 4.000 years.
For example:
• Pre-historic vessels with blackened rims,
• Painted vessels from more than 3000 years ago,
• Coptic ostraca
Ostraca are small pieces of pottery with writing or drawings.

Bayerisches Nationalmuseum
The Bavarian National Museum has one of the largest collections
of European art and culture.
In Weiden it shows objects that are connected to the region.
For example:
• Faience from Amberg and Sulzbach,
• Stoneware from Creußen,
• Traditional pottery and porcelain from the Frankenthal factory.
