Time After Time

Why do forms, motifs and gestures return again and again in ceramics?

Ceramics is one of the oldest cultural techniques known to mankind. For around 25,000 years, forms, production methods and ornaments have repeatedly reappeared, disappeared, been reinterpreted and transferred to other contexts. Time After Time refers to this cyclical moment of repetition and transformation that is inscribed in the material. Clay reacts directly to the hand, is moulded, fired and becomes permanent. Between everyday object, ritual and art, ceramics continue to move along timeless questions of function, meaning and form.

The exhibition brings together eight contemporary positions that question this long space of experience from today’s perspective: Jantje Almstedt, Markus Heller, Mylasher, Sarah Pschorn, Karoline Schneider, Josefine Schulz, Ronny Szillo and Hannes Uhlenhaut. Their works take up historical vessel forms, techniques and imagery and translate them into individual, contemporary formal languages. In dialogue with the museum’s collection, it becomes clear how ceramics are constantly renewing themselves and writing their past in the process – time after time.
